What a takeoff is
A takeoff is a list of materials counted from the drawings: how many forms, how many bars, how many windows and how much flashing. A good one matches your plans and notes what is assumed.
It is the foundation of an accurate quote and a smooth delivery.
What to send
Send the floor plans, elevations, wall sections, window and door schedule and the structural drawings, including bar schedules and notes. Include the project city and your target dates.
If the plans are still changing, say so, and send the latest set when it updates.
What a good takeoff includes
It lists each item by size and quantity, with accessories such as bucks, ledges, chairs and ties. It flags any item that is unclear. It separates what is included from what is not.
You should be able to read it against the drawings line by line.
Check it before you order
Review the takeoff with your estimator and your foreman. Compare it with your own count, check corners and openings and ask about waste factors.
A short review saves a long delay.
